Grant Stockton Mickins III

A Life of Service

Grant Stockton Mickins IIIGrant Mickins III was a longtime Glide Memorial Church member who cared deeply for family, friends, community, and justice.

Born in Florida, he moved to San Francisco where he started his life of service. He served the City and County of San Francisco in many capacities throughout his career, including serving as the Director of the San Francisco Human Rights Commission (SF HRC) from 1975 until 1988, resolving complaints of discrimination in housing, employment, and public accommodations.

Among his many accomplishments, he was instrumental in passing non-discrimination hiring policies as well as promoting utilization of local women- and minority-owned businesses on city contracts.

In addition to his critical work at the SF HRC, Grant also helped establish the LGBTQI Advisory Board, was a board member of the Five County BART Task Force, and was board president of both the SF Federal Credit Union and the San Francisco Civil Service Commission as well as President of the Friends of the SF HRC.

Grant was a dedicated Glide Memorial Church parishioner who always sat with his friends in the same pews every week. He found a community that shared his passion for service as well as his passion for connecting with neighbors near and far to create a better world. His Homegoing Celebration Service, held at Glide Memorial Church, was attended by many friends, family, and former colleagues and coworkers who all fondly recalled numerous times when Grant stood up for what was right in the name of justice time and time again. The many seeds of service that he planted during his lifetime will continue to bear fruit for decades to come.

Grant cared so deeply for Glide Memorial Church that he left a generous bequest to the Church via his trust. Such gifts ensure that the Church will continue to provide nourishment of the soul and spiritual support far into the future, further cementing his legacy of service.
